“Spicci per un caffè?”
Ho rallentato e mi sono girata verso la direzione della voce.
Lui mi ha appena chiesto, “Do you have change for a coffee?”
La prima volta che qualcuno mi ha chiesto di dare spicci per un caffè, pensavo che fosse la cosa più strana che abbia mai sentito. Ecco una persona mendicare per le strade e vogliono un caffè?
Ma sì, se non vendono qualcosa o chiedono del cibo, un caffè è al terzo posto. Ecco perché qualcosa che si chiama “un caffè sospeso” esiste.
Il concetto è che tu compri un altro caffè quando paghi per il tuo. Letteralmente significa “suspended coffee,” e credo che sia originario di Napoli.
Ecco un esempio:
You: È un caffè sospeso! Ho letto che in Italia è usanza lasciare pagato un caffè per qualcuno che non se lo può permettere….è vero? - It’s a suspended coffee. I read that in Italy it’s customary to pay for someone that can’t do it… is that true?
So the next time you’re in a bar in Italy getting your morning cappuccino, consider getting a caffè sospeso for someone else. Small gestures of kindness make the world a better place (and you’ll get some more Italian practice in.)
