[Italian Lesson] Quanto ti fermi?

Mi fermo per tre settimane.

“Che bello! Quando esattamente? E per quanto ti fermerai?”

It means, “That’s great! When exactly? And for how long will you be staying?”

This is SUCH a useful expression to ask a friend who may be coming to the country where you live or a question you’ll be asked when you let friends know you’re returning back to Italy for a trip.

You can use it with the future tense as “fermerai,” but you can also use it in the present, which would be:

Quanto ti fermi? - How long are you staying?

You can answer simply with the time, like “Per tre settimane - for three weeks.”

Or, if you want to use the full sentence, you can say “Mi fermo per tre settimane. - I’m staying for three weeks.”

You can also use the verbs below

  • Mi trattengo / Mi tratterrò - I’m staying… / I will stay

  • Sto / Starò - I’m staying… / I will stay

Ecco due esempi:

  • Ci fermiamo a Roma per quattro giorni e poi ci tratteniamo a Napoli per tre giorni. Dopo quella tappa del viaggio, staremo in Sardegna per due settimane. Abbiamo famiglia ad Alghero. Non vedo l’ora di passare del tempo con loro e vedere le Grotte di Nettuno! - We’re staying in Rome for four days and then we’ll stay in Naples for three days. After that leg of the trip, we’ll stay in Sardinia for two weeks. We have family in Alghero. I can’t wait to spend time with them and see the Neptune’s Cave!

  • Per quanto ti trattieni a Milano? - For how long will you be staying in Milan?

Buono studio!
