[Italian Lesson] I'm no Chef Ramsey, but...

I’m no Chef Ramsey, ma mi diletto nella cucina.

Have you seen the show Uncharted? If not, Chef Ramsey visits well-known and remote parts of the world to learn how to make their traditional dishes from master chefs. I watched all of it during maternity leave. Ero ossessionata da questa serie.

If you haven’t gathered by now from all of my weekly lessons about food here, here, and here, I love food and I love to cook.

I’m no Chef Ramsey, ma mi diletto nella cucina.

To say this expression, you use the reflexive verb ‘dilettarsi’, which means ‘to dabble.’

(This might remind you of the word ‘dilettante’ in English.)

You would use this to describe hobbies of yours or areas where you’re not a professional.

Altri esempi:

  • Non mi posso paragonare ad Adele, ma mi diletto nel canto. - I can’t compare myself to Adele, but I dabble in singing.

  • Durante il giorno, faccio il contabile ma, di sera, mi diletto nel teatro. - During the day, I’m an accountant, but during the night, I dabble in theater.

E voi invece? In che cosa vi dilettate? Scrivetemi!

Un abbraccio,

Cher
