[Italian Lesson] I'll bet!

Instead of awkward silence, one of my favorite words that shows the speaker I’m listening and keeps the conversation moving is “Immagino!”

You know when someone is telling you a story and you’re listening but you don’t have anything substantial to add?

Instead of awkward silence (or endlessly nodding), one of my favorite words that shows the speaker I’m listening and keeps the conversation moving is “Immagino!”

While you can translate it as “I imagine,” it’s used to mean “I bet!” or “I get it!”

Ti faccio un esempio con un dialogo.

You: È così difficile gestire due aziende e essere una mamma con tre figli. Sono esausta! - It’s so difficult managing two businesses and being a mother to three kids. I’m exhausted!

Silvia: Immagino! - I bet!

Of course, you can use “immagino” to mean “I imagine” too.

For example, “Hai fatto un viaggio molto lungo! Immagino che tu stia stanco. - You’ve had a long trip. I imagine that you’re tired.”

Un caro saluto,

Cher
