There is something that is so satisfying and fun about learning proverbs in another language. I love to compare the proverbs I know and love in English with the counterparts that exist in Italian.

1.) Galeotto fu il libro

The act of matchmaking two people together. It comes from the 5th canto of the Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy. In Inferno, we learn how a book — il libro — was an intermediary between Paolo Malatesta and Francesca.

  • Silvia e Jacopo erano amici  da un secolo ma Jacopo voleva qualcosa di più con lei. Lui ha scritto una canzone confessando il suo amore e galeotto fu il libro. Ora sono sposati. - Silvia and Jacopo had been friends for forever but Jacopo wanted more. He wrote her a song confessing his love and that did the trick. Now, they’re married.
